According to VT newspaper 7 Days, Alex Bea ’12 and a team of Midd Kids are working to develop an iron-rich food supplement…using crickets. Bumu (Bug Munch abbreviated) is breeding the critters on campus, grinding them into a fine powder, and testing out recipes that could be a solution to global hunger–preferable, they believe, to keeping up with the demand for livestock that themselves consume precious resources.
Bumu is a semi-finalist in Dell’s Social Innovation Challenge, competing for $50,000 in funds for their start-up.
