Colby, Wes Pulitzer Connections

Earlier this week, Colby grad Matt Apuzzo ‘00 was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in investigative reporting for his work as part of the AP’s investigative team. In a 2007 interview with Colby Magazine he said, “ I’m a pre-med student gone horribly, horribly awry. This is what happens when you get D’s in organic chemistry.” Not bad Mr. Apuzzo.

Professor Quiara Alegria Hudes, currently teaching at Wesleyan, has been awarded a Pulitzer Prize in the drama category for “Water by the Spoonful,”  a work dealing with the Iraq-War.

Here’s a summary of “Water by the Spoonful” from Hudes’ website: “Somewhere in Philadelphia, Elliot has returned from Iraq and is struggling to find his place in the world.  Somewhere in a chat room, recovering addicts forge an unbreakable bond of support and love.  The boundaries of family and community are stretched across continents and cyberspace as birth families splinter and online families collide.”

True to ‘Cac form, the visiting faculty member was teaching a class when she heard the news of her award. Wesleying reports that Hudes, “left the classroom briefly today to answer a phone call. When she returned, her face was white. ‘I, uh, just won the Pulitzer Prize,’ she told her students, who promptly applauded. ”
